Description: "Les Provinciales ou Lettres Escrittes par Louis de Montalte, A un Provincial de ses amis & aux RR. PP. Jesuites, sur la Morale & la Politique de ces Peres" was written by French mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal and published in 1684 by Chez Balthasar Winfelt (Cologne, Germany). Originally published between 1656 and 1657, the eighteen letters were credited to the pseudonymous Louis de Montalte (still the case in this 1684 edition) due to their controversial content. Pascal wrote in defense of Jansenist Antoine Arnauld, who was branded a heretic, and touches on subjects such as sorcery and the justification for assassination. The final letter attacked the Pope, leading Louis XIV to ban the work in France in 1660. This edition includes the material in four languages, in parallel: in the original French, in Latin (from an earlier edition), Spanish and Italian (translations first available here). It's a 4.75"x8" leather-bound hardcover with pagination: [40], 613pp. In good condition with numerous scratches and spots of wear to the leather, exposed corners, cracks forming at the upper joints, much loss to the gilt spine decorations, a bump to the front top right corner that affects the first 250 or so pages. There are a couple small marks to the 2nd page.
