IMPORTANT PARTIAL AUTOGRAPH LETTER HANDWRITTEN BY JOHN MARSHALL CHASTISING HIS SON FOR PURCHASING LAND AND MOVING HIS SLAVES TO THE SOUTHWEST ONLY ONE MONTH BEFORE HIS DEATH Important partial autograph letter handwritten by John Marshall chastising his son, James Keith Marshall, for purchasing land and moving his slaves to the Southwest of the United States only one month before his death. Contains two pages in a single leaf with a partial integral leaf, measures 7.875 by 6.25 inches, created in Richmond, VA on April 25, 1835, and in fine condition with staining and most of the integral leaf missing, likely removed for the signature. “YOUR DETERMINATION TO REMOVE YOUR NEGROES TO THE SOUTHWEST CAME UPON ME ENTIRELY BY SURPRISE…I AM FAR FROM SAYING THAT THE DECISION IS EVEN NOW INJUDICIOUS BUT IT IS MUCH MORE HAZARDOUS THAN IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SOME YEARS PAST.” Reads in full: “My dear Son, Your letter of the 15th did not reach me till the day before yesterday. You have no doubt received before this my letter by your brother which contained all the information I had to give relative to my affairs. As soon as I return from N.C. I shall avail myself of the first vessel going to Alexandria which I can engage to carry my wine spirits and some other articles. Your determination to remove your negroes to the Southwest came upon me entirely by surprise. It would have been fortunate if you had formed it a few years earlier as you might have obtained land on better terms and might have derived the advantage of the present very high price of cotton. I am far from saying that the decision is even now injudicious but it is much more hazardous than it would have been some years past. If you persevere in your intention as I presume you will, you ought to visit that country and select your situation this fall. It is possible that valuable purchases may be made from the United States; but to do that with any security you must view the land and know what you buy. A man who purchases at hazard, not knowing what he buys, will most probably make a ruinous bargain. I doubt not that you have made extensive enquiries of SW…have sought information from all your acquaintances who have visited that country, and you will do well to continue those enquiries. There is said to be much fine cotton land in Mississippi Alabama Florida (the Tallahassee country) and on the west of the Mississippi. You can….” James took his father’s advice and continued his farming operations in Virginia until he died in 1862.
