Description: Civil War Store Card for John W. Lee, Baker & Confectioner in Lexington, KentuckyFuld KY480B-7a (copper) R-8 NGC MS-66 RB Tied for Finest Known among all certified tokensMr. Lee was one of two merchants to issue store card tokens from the town of Lexington during the Civil War. He obtained his store card tokens from Cincinnati token maker John Stanton. A single custom die was combined with eight stock dies for token production. One of the die combinations is unique and the only known token is in the collection of the American Numismatic Society. The token offered in this listing is one of five varieties that utilize stock dies advertising various quantities of milk. Though the Fuld book suggests that these varieties were prepared as numismatic strikes, all of these copper tokens are known in both circulated and uncirculated condition with some examples showing quite a bit of wear. All of these copper varieties are very rare. In fact, all varieties for this merchant are very rare. This is a superb, uncirculated specimen of the "one gallon of milk" variety featuring attractive RB color, a sharp strike, and cartwheel luster. It is tied for finest known among all certified tokens.Shipping via USPS registered mail is free.
