Description: Lincoln Cent Error Lot Broad Struck Clipped Planchet Filled Die LCE12 Here is a lot of (8) genuine and authentic Lincoln cent errors. Some are wheat backs and some may be memorial backs. There are (2) Broad struck errors, (1) Clipped planchet, (1) Blank planchet, (1) Filled die and (3) obvious Planchet defect strikes. The coolest errors in this lot are the broad struck, the die filled, the blank planchet and the planchet defect error. In the minting process of a coin, there is a spring-loaded collar around the base of the die that holds the un-stamped coin-blank in place to prevent the coin from spreading under the tremendous pressure of the obverse hammer die striking against the reverse die. The broad struck error occurs when the collar opens early allowing the coin to spread ever so slightly, giving the coin a distinctive and visually obvious wide rim face on appearance and a stretching of the letters to the edge of the coin. There are all kinds of variants of the broad struck not discussed here. The die filled error occurs when the obverse hammer die accumulates machine gunk such as grease cloth or other metal on the die causing missing numbers, letters or details. The planchet defect error strike occurs when any coin blank has damage to it prior to striking from missing metal, lamination or deep cracks in the blank from incomplete annealing.
