Description: This vintage real photo postcard features British dancer and stage actress, Mabel Love (1874-1953). She is considered by many to be one of the great stage beauties of her era. In 1894, Winston Churchill wrote her requesting an autographed photo. Her West End productions included "La Cigale" and "Pepita". She appeared on Broadway in "Man and Superman". She made her stage debut at age 12 in "Alice In Wonderland". At 14, she became popular appearing with George Edwardes's Burlesque at the Gaiety Theatre. In 1889, the "Star" newspaper reported that Love had vanished. It was discovered that she had gone to the banks of the Thames River to possibly commit suicide. Gossip and misfortune apparently helped sell newspapers just like it does today. Love was a popular subject of real photo postcards. Over thirty years she had starred in a plethora of burlesques, pantomimes, and musical comedies. She retired from the stage in 1918. In 1926 she opened a dance school in London. This portrait postcard was published by Rotary Photo as part of a series (No.155o). Mabel Love's portrait was taken by the Kilpatrick studio. This postcard has a light hard-to-seethin crease in the top left quadrant of image. The card is in overall Good Condition (see scans).
