Description: For sale is an original ink drawing by New York and Maine Artist Jo Levy (1909 - 1995). Jo Levy painted but also did some great modernist sculpture which is highly sought after. Provenance. Estate of Jo Levy and Murray Hantman(husband/artist). This drawing features a view of a New England coastline and most likely Monhegan Island Maine where her and her artist husband Murray Hartman summered. It is pen and ink with a reverse abstract painting. Signed lower right and dated 1954 Unframed and in overall good condition Measurements: 6” x 8 3/4” Unframed Jo Levy (1909 - 1995) was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania where she studied at the Carnegie Institute. After moving to New York she studied with main artist William Zorach at the Art Students League, as well as spending time in France and Italy. From 1936 through 1941, Levy worked in the sculpture division of the WPA and exhibited with the Woodstock Art Association. She worked in Maine during the summer from 1946 until the end of her life, producing a large body of work on paper that ranges from whimsical go sketches of every day life quotidian subjects to abstract color studies studies for sculpture. While enrolling at the newly-formed Artists’ Union to advocate for the labor rights of creative workers, Levy met the artist Murray Hantman who would become her husband. Levy and Hantman believed in creating art for the public good. Their Artists’ Union friends and colleagues from the Federal Art Project formed the nucleus of their social circle and would become the community of artists who worked together during summers on Monhegan Island off the coast of Maine. Levy and Hantman lived in New York and summered on Monhegan Island until 1975, followed by summers in Owls Head and New Harbor, Maine, until 1988,
