Mappin & Webb Solid Sterling Silver Salt Cellar, Sheffield, England 1936

Description: This piece is marked with the M&W Stamp and the Sheffield 1936 mark. It does not marked Sterling 925 - but many pieces of that time were not. Mappin & Webb traces its roots to a silver workshop founded in 1775 in Sheffield. With over 240 years of significance in the world of silver and fine jewellery, it is no surprise that they are classed amongst the finest the UK has to offer. Indeed, the company has held Royal Warrants to the British monarchy since 1897 and continues to produce breathtaking silver and jewellery to the present day. The first Mappin hallmark was recorded in the 18th century, with Jonathan Mappin specialising in the cutlery trade. His son Joseph followed him into the business, and then his grandson who was also called Joseph. In 1849 Joseph Mappin opened the first London showroom. This move proved a huge success, with Charles Dickens purchasing a claret jug in 1859 and eventually gaining a royal warrant by Queen Victoria in 1897. A Royal Warrant by the Russian Imperial Household followed in 1899, and during the fist thirty years of the 20th century Mappin & Webb expanded their store globally, in Buenos Aires, Paris, Lisbon, Shanghai and many other key locations. Over the years Mappin & Webb have been responsible for some awe-inspiring royal commissions, including a silver statue of the Duke of Wellington in 2015, trophies for Royal Ascot and many more. Silverware by Mappin & Webb is renowned for its quality, and so fetches good prices at auction. To get a free valuation of your own collection, fill in the online form below.
