A March 30 1836 1-pg letter datelined London and addressed to "Capt. P. A. Oliver care of Messers Kranston & Co., Hamburgh." Datelined London, March 30, 1836 and headed "Capn. Paul A. Oliver, Hamburg." First Postmarks - on the reverse, in brown appear to be British "F 36 105" and F 36 269." Second Postmark -- Oval Antwerp "St. P. A. 4 APR 36" in Black Manuscript crayon, manuscript magenta and manuscript "3/4" all on obverse. Content of the letter as follows: "London May 18, 1837, Capn. Paul A. Oliver, Hamburg, Dear Sir we have received your favor of the 25th instant and we are pleased to hear of your safe arrival your escape from the Havanna danger. We doubt not you may do well in that place at a later period, and to enable you to arrange your plans into effect we authorize you to draw on us for the cost of merchandise, which you may ship in the TIber, on your own account, and for your disbursements. The bills lading to be filled up to our order, freight free, went to us and insurance to be made by us here or by our agent Mr. Robert Sloope, Jr. In Boston. We shall expect you to inform us to whom you wish the bills lading to be sent. Y0u will find your account current enclosed & hope you will find it correct, remaining truly yr obt svt, T. Wiggin & Co." Capt. Paul Ambrose Oliver (Sr.) was born in Philadelphia on April 18, 1796, and died at Fort Hamilton, Long Island, New York in June 1848 and was interred in Greenwood Cemetery. He was the eldest son of Capt. Thomas and Sarah Ambrose Oliver. On July 28, 1819, he married Mary Van Dusen, the daughter of a ship builder in Kensington, Connecticut. He was trained on board ship and was first mate of the "Nancy and Kate,” his father’s ship. He was washed overboard in 1812 at age 16. He was commissioned a Master in the U.S. Navy on Apr. 15,1814, having served in the Navy, especially at the battle of Lake Erie in 1812, commanding a vessel that took prisoners. In 1819, he was recorded as shipmaster and resided in Philadelphia. He owned and commanded the ships "Tiber," "Superior," "Trenton,” and "Louisiana"--vessels as notable in his day as Cunard Liners later were. His children were George Washington, born June 15,1820, who resided in New Orleans being active in the cotton trade; Mary Seymour, born May 15, 1823; Paulina Ambrosina, born Aug.26, 1828; Paul Ambrose Oliver (Jr.), born July 18, 1830 on board the ship Louisiana in the English Channel under the U.S. flag, was educated in Altona, Germany, came to New York and engaged in the shipping business. In service for the Union Army, he was received the Medal of Honor and was present at the surrender at Appomattox. Free Domestic Shipping.
