Description: Matchbox Models of YesteryearVintage Diecast Model Y6-2 - 1926 Type 35 Bugatti - Red The Lesney toy company was formed by two school friends, Leslie Smith and Rodney Smith (unrelated) - the company name being a contraction of their two first names - shortly after the end of World War 2. The two Smiths were very soon joined by Jack Odell, who had been an employee at the same diecasting firm Rodney had previously worked for. Rodney Smith left the business early on. It was Leslie Smith and Jack Odell who created the "Matchbox" series of model vehicles, and the company grew to be one of the most successful diecast manufacturers in the world, with the brand name still in existence today, now under the ownership of Mattel. Jack Odell had a particular liking for vintage and antique vehicles, and was very keen to produce a range of models depicting such classics. Thus, the "Models of Yesteryear" series was launched in 1956. Apparently Smith initially opposed the new line, especially the word "yesteryear", which he pointed out could not be found in any dictionary of the day, but the name stuck and Models of Yesteryear became a worldwide phenomenon with collectors that still endures today. Offered here is an example of No. Y6-2, the 1926 Type 35 Bugatti. First released in 1961, earlier versions were finished in blue, but in 1965 the colour was switched to red. The model was phased out in 1967, so there are far fewer red examples to be found than the blue ones. It does not have its original box, but will, of course, be securely packaged for shipping. Good pre-owned condition. No obvious chips to paintwork - possibly been re-painted by a previous owner. See photos - all photos show actual item.
