These types of plants are known as rheophytes, and do not require any kind of soil substrate to grow. Being a rheophyte, Microsorum pteropus should be attached to rocks or wood in an aquarium, which means that it can be used in ultra-low-tech setups, even without any nutrient soil. Rheophytic species such as Microsorum pteropus are found in incredibly moist conditions, and are often found thriving under the water's surface. Hundreds of thousands of years of adaptations in an aquatic habitat has caused Microsorum pteropus to be completely happy in an aquarium with no CO2, low light, and a low nutrient supply.
