Description: Vintage authentic Mayan (indigenous people) ceremonial wood mask depicting a native chieftain with a bird-themed headpiece, hand carved of local wood and hand painted by a local artisan. This mask was purchased in an Antigua, Guatemala native market in 1993. Masks of this type have been worn during native festivals for centuries, and their use probably pre-dates European arrival in the Americas. Eye holes allow the wearer to see. The chieftain design is not uncommon among these masks, but carving and painting quality vary significantly from one piece to another. Excellent condition in view of age. Eyelet screws and wire added to facilitate hanging the mask on a wall. This is a large mask. Approximate dimensions: height, 17β; width, 10 ΒΌβ; depth 6β. Minor imperfections and paint chips from original construction. Please view the attached photos for details and visual inspection of this particular piece.
