People from all over the world collect, buy, sell and trade these unique gaming tokens. The first Silver Strikes were won from special slot machines in the Reno/Tahoe area of Nevada in 1992. The tokens have been issued with redeemable values of $2, $3, $7, $10, $20, $28, $40, $200 and $300. The most common denomination is $10. The older Silver Strikes have a higher silver content. As the price of silver increased, the amount of silver decreased. Today, most strikes are Clad or brass with heavy silver plating. McCarran International Airport:Named for Nevada Senator Patrick McCarran, who was instrumental in the development of aviation in both Las Vegas and a national scale, McCarran International Airport covers 2,800 acres and is located about 8 miles south of downtown Las Vegas. The airport has recently been renamed Harry Reid International Airport. Early History: The first airport in Las Vegas was Anderson Field (1920) which was located near Sahara Avenue and Paradise Rd. This was purchased by the Rockwell Brothers in 1925 and renamed Rockwell Field. In 1926, Western Air Express began carrying mail and eventually passengers. The Brothers eventually sold the land and the new owner cancelled Western Air Express's lease. Western Air Express found another airfield northeast of the city (now Nellis Air Force Base). The city tried to buy the airfield, but WAE refused. With the emergence of WWII, WAE was pressured to sell. Nevada Senator Pat McCarran helped obtain federal funding for the city to buy the field and build a terminal. He also helped establish a gunnery school by the United States Army Air Corps at the field. In 1941, it was renamed McCarran Field. Another air field existed called Alamo Field which was established in 1942 by George Crockett south of Las Vegas, at the present location of McCarran Airport. The Army wanted to open a base at the site of McCarran Field so Clark County purchased Alamo Field to make it its airline airport. Alamo Field became McCarran Field in 1948. The original McCarran Field was renamed Nellis Air Force Base in 1950. Fun Fact #1: In its first year of operation, McCarran Field served over 35,000 passengers. In 2018, McCarran International Airport served over 49,000,000 passengers.Fun Fact #2: There are only 2 airports in the world that have slot machines - The Las Vegas Airport (LAS) and the Reno Airport (RNO).Fun Fact #3: Most passengers fly to California from Las Vegas.
