Thomas Barnes (1749-1816), b. Merrimack, New Hampshire. He was known as "Father Barnes" and was called the "Father of Universalism in Maine," being the first ordained Universalist minister in that province. He had been raised in the Congregational faith, had joined a Baptist church in 1771, and became a Universalist in 1783. As a member of the Maine legislature (1897-1814) he led the successful effort to end taxation in support of the Congregational church to the detriment of all others. He was President of the Universalist General Convention (1809-1812).
