It has, as its chief ambition, two purposes: first, to help steer the student yet immature in the language over that awkward stage in which, after the first introduction to the tongue, he needs suitable reading material but is as yet unprepared to enter the field of the classics; second, to help awaken in the student's mind an appreciation of the genius of a people widely different from his own – in other words, to awaken in him that "other soul" which is indispensable for the right appreciation of a foreign language and literature. The book is designed for rapid reading and comprehension, and so the Exercises have been kept entirely subordinate to the reading material: they tend toward the informational rather than the highly technical. It is intended that the Vocabulary should contain all words and idioms used in the text except proper names, of which only the most important ones have been included. In the phonetic list of Indian words have been included only the most difficult examples.
