Description: Antique print titled 'A Knight Performing Homage', 1100 A.D. It depicts a homage ceremony. Homage (from Medieval Latin hominaticum, lit. "pertaining to a man") in the Middle Ages was the ceremony in which a feudal tenant or vassal pledged reverence and submission to his feudal lord, receiving in exchange the symbolic title to his new position (investiture). It was a symbolic acknowledgement to the lord that the vassal was, literally, his man (homme). This print originates from 'A critical inquiry into antient armour' by Sir Samuel Rush Meyrick (1842), which is widely acknowledged as the best book on armor ever produced. Meyrick (1783-1848) pursued a lifelong passion for studying and collecting medieval armory, and was intensely interested in creating aesthetically pleasing and historically accurate images of European armor, and thus, each drawing is rendered with careful precision, illustrating all aspects of the armor and weapons. Measuring 10.5 x 14.5", this portrait orientation print features hand-tinting and is a first edition. The artwork is made on paper, and is handcrafted by aquatint etching and hand-coloring. The matted piece is an original print from 1842, not a copy, produced by Henry G. Bohn, York Street, Covent Garden, London; it is perfect for collectors of militaria, medieval costume and weapons.
