These mats are not just an air mattress or foam mattress, these use foam with an outer layer to help hold air, so are 1/2 - 1" thick without weight applied (average 1/2-3/4"). Brand new they would only be 1" thick max. While traditional foam mats are a fixed thickness, usually less: 1/4 - 1/2", and air mattresses rely solely on air to be inflated and will go completely flat with a hole, these will never go all "flat" because of the foam and air that naturally stays in the mat.
