Original colour pictorial boards featuring a sinister ghostly form with gilt titles. 228pp rough trimmed. Decorative title page featuring a different design to cover. Condition: A very good copy. A little rubbing and corner nicking. One thin splash mark to lower edge of rear board. Ink name to half title. A very trivial number of fox spots to a small number of pages. Hinges firm without cracking. Endpapers in very good shape. Binding firm though some gatherings have thin gaps. The title page design has been expertly painted in with careful precision by a former owner. Supplied with custom-sized thick plastic wrapper. The photographs are the most reliable guide to condition. Context: An important collection of late Victorian ghost stories in an extremely striking original binding. Ordinarily I would condemn anyone who dared to colour-in an illustration in a vintage collection of ghost stories to eternal - and hopefully painful - damnation but the sheer skill of the artistry in adding sympathetic colour to the title page actually enhances the book. (I presume it was undertaken by either Ethel or Nora, as per the ink inscription on the half-title page.) Anyway, a lovely copy of a handsome book. Important Terms: Returns are not accepted.
