Description: Offered here is a single issue of an interesting 1846 (Vol.1 No. 37, 7 pages) newspaper published in New York City by Ebenezer Meriam, scientist and philanthropist. Ebenezer Meriam (1794-1864) was born in Massachusetts near Concord. He moved to Kentucky and later Zanesville Ohio, where he established a dry goods business. In 1838, Meriam moved to New York City where he began the manufacture of soap and candles, thereby making a considerable fortune. His primary interests were science, particularly meteorology (apparently recording hourly observations of the weather for many years) and helping those in need. One biography states that he "opposed injustice in municipal and legislative enactments". Thus, in 1841 Meriam began publishing, at his sole cost, the New-York Municipal Gazette (later just the "Municipal Gazette") which focused on the political and municipal issues in his adopted city. The issue of the newspaper offered here says that it is "Published by the Anti-Assessment Committee and Distributed Gratuitously". It focuses in part on tax assessments against property in New York City which Meriam considered unfair. However, the newspaper has articles about political conventions and court cases in the city and New York State.
