Description: Failure of the CP301 muting module is a common problem in WM-D6 and early WM-D6C walkmans. Firstly, a failing CP301 will cause the sound output to distort. Finally the muting module will fail completely and there will be no sound out, either through the headphones or the “Line Out” socket. What is the muting module? The CP301 module (Sony Part No. 1-464-177-00) is a six pin potted hybrid module. In the D6 it is found on the edge of the main circuit board, next to the “Line Out” socket. In the early (Pre 1994) D6Cs it is found on the edge of the main circuit board, in between the “Line In” and “Line Out” sockets. The later D6Cs use circuit board with a lot of surface mount components, with the muting circuit built into the main circuit board. They do not need a muting module. The CP301 muting module is often identified as “177-11” or “177-12”. These are the same module (part No.1-464-177-00). Original Sony CP301 muting modules in WM-D6C (top) and WM-D6 (bottom) How to find out if the muting module has failed. If the sound from the walkman is distorted, broken, intermittent or there is no sound coming out, there are two tests to find out if the problem is a faulty muting module: 1) Spray the muting module with freezer spray, while the walkman is playing. Sometimes the module will work normally or the sound will return, for a few minutes, while the module is cold.2) Remove the module. If the sound returns and there is no distortion with the module removed, then the muting module is the problem. If the walkman works without a muting module, why does it need one?Without the muting module, there will be a very loud, and unpleasant, “thump” on the output signal when starting and stopping the walkman. If playing the walkman through an amplifier and speakers, via the “Line Out” jack, then you could damage your speakers if you don’t remember to turn the volume down before starting and stopping the walkman. The muting module attenuates the walkman’s output (headphones and line out) by 44dB when starting and stopping, which suppresses the thumps. It’s details such as this in the design which make the D6 and D6C stand out as high quality audio components. Replacement Muting ModuleThe original potted muting module is no longer available from Sony. This is a direct plug in replacement for the Sony module, which will fit either the D6 or the early version D6C.Simply remove the old faulty module and fit the new replacement module. One muting module is required per walkman.
