NASA's RGEFP is a once in a lifetime experience for teachers and students to propose, design, build, test and fly a microgravity experiment aboard the microgravity aircraft. The RGEFP selects research teams of students and educators dedicated to enhancing their science and technical knowledge to conduct their experiments aboard the aircraft. The program which was founded in 1995, is based out of NASA's Johnson Space Center and flies selected research teams out of Ellington Field. The Reduced Gravity Education Flight Program (RGEFP) is not currently accepting proposals for the 2015 flight year. NASA is in the process of identifying how and or if Microgravity Flight Services will be conducted in the future. Until a decision is made, student and teacher flight campaigns will not be scheduled. The RGEFP team is working to identify alternate plans for FY15 and beyond. Please check this website for updates as they become available. Undergraduate students from various universities participated in the second flight week of NASA’s Reduced Gravity Education Flight Program (RGEFP) this year. Gravitational effects on unique experiments that were proposed, designed, and fabricated by teams of undergraduate students from schools around the country. This past week of the program, called Microgravity University, was for undergraduate student learners. Students were welcomed to the program and briefed on safety procedures before setting up experiments. Experiments were then given a Pre-Test Readiness Review (Pre-TRR) by a panel of NASA engineers and scientists for last minute touch ups before the Test Readiness Review (TRR) and approval for flight. Experiments were then loaded onto the microgravity aircraft. Topics of scientific experiments include biology, physics, computer science, earth science, and many others. “We’ll turn the apparatus on before takeoff, then we’ll be there to check for warning messages and monitor the state of the apparatus through the crew system window.” said Landon Nye, engineering student at Boise State University. Boise State students tested the effects of teriparatide on calcium signaling in bone cells during parabolic flight. “Now that it’s all installed and set, I’m starting to really feel excited.” said Nye. “Keeping the beams from losing pressure and hoping our computer stays consistent will be something we will have to account for, but I’m really excited.” said Alyssa Avery, engineering student at Oklahoma State University, talking about her experiment. Oklahoma State students constructed an experiment on the investigation of artificial gravity habitat dynamics. Avery was preparing to fly with part of her team on the second day of flight. “When we see what we need to change after the first flight, it’s up to us to get even better data.” The next flight week for Microgravity University will be July 12th through July 20th. Several other programs will use NASA’s microgravity aircraft throughout the summer, including Teaching from Space, Systems Engineering Education Discovery (SEED), and several others. For more on NASA’s RGEFP, June 17, 2013 Reduced Gravity Education Flight Program Overview: The Reduced Gravity Education Flight Program provides a unique academic experience for students to successfully propose, design, fabricate, fly and evaluate a reduced gravity experiment over the course of approximately four months. The overall experience includes scientific research, hands-on investigational design, test operations and educational/public outreach activities. Investigations will adhere to the same processes and procedures governing NASA research and test flights so that teams gain insight into the workings of NASA and ensure participant and investigation safety guidelines are followed. The aircraft provides a reduced gravity environment, similar to the environment of space flight. The reduced gravity environment is achieved by flying an aircraft through a series of parabolic maneuvers (see below). These maneuvers will be flown consecutively, i.e. roller coaster fashion. Normal missions, lasting approximately 1.7 hours, consist of 30 parabolic maneuvers over the Gulf of Mexico. Each parabola provides about 30 seconds of hypergravity (about 1.8G-2G) as the plane climbs to the top of the parabola. Once the plane starts to “nose over” the top of the parabola to descend toward Earth, the plane experiences about 18 to 25 seconds of microgravity (0G). At the very top and bottom of the parabola, flyers experience a mix of partial G's between 0 and 1.8 (called "dirty air"). The aircraft test deck is equipped with electrical power and photo lights. NASA JSC will provide photographers for still photography and video coverage during the flight. Workspace on the ground for assembly of investigations will be provided. During the flight, the flight team will initiate and conduct the investigation, and collect data on behalf of the students. Conditions permitting, each investigation will be flown twice so that there can be replication of the investigation and any problems encountered during the first flight can be corrected during the second. .
