Description: About 40 miles from Arches National Park, near the ghost town of Cisco, I have a couple of sites that I collect coprolite (fossilized dinosaur poo). These sites are in the middle of the "dinosaur diamond" a hotbed of Mesozoic remains. It has also been home to the Utes and others for thousands of years. The interior of much of the coprolite is a form of jasper that is easily worked. Near my main collection site there are three locations that are littered with the waste flakes generated by percussion flint knapping. Percussion knapping is when a hammer stone is used to knock off flakes until the desired form is achieved. This type of knapping leaves a distinctive bulb at the point of impact and is virtually impossible to arise naturally. Since I am finding no points, not even broken points, I think the stones are being struck to determine which ones to take back to the river where they had access to wood to heat treat the stone. This flake shows beautiful, dendritic jasper and a sliver of the desert varnished outer crust. 2.27 x 1.39 X 0.48 inches, 0.9 ounces. ref:16-3
