If you are familiar with the London Spectator publication of the same era, this book is set up similarly, but this book has over 50 times the detail. some historical context: In 1797, leading nations were just concluding the First Coalition War with revolutionary France, with disasterous outcome for the Coalition nations (e.g. Britain, Prussia, Austria, Russia). (Britain was the only nation to have opposed France in all 7 Coalition wars.)A young Napoleon Bonaparte had just arrived in France's army, but was not yet famous (he seized power over France just two years later, in 1799, after which France's wars were termed the "Napoleonic Wars"). The USA just had its 3rd presidential election, with Adams (who feared the extremist terrors of revolutionary France) winning over Jefferson (a Franco-phile). USA tried for neutrality in this world-wide conflict, but had more natural sympathy for revolutionary France, and lingering antipathy (from America's Colonial revolution) for Great Britain.The far west of USA was the states Kentucky and Tennesse, with the latter admitted to statehood only the previous year (1796). This sets the stage for the events which are chonicled month by month in the 180 page current events section. Very entertaining. ---------------------------------------Condition:Good Condition for this vintage 1798 annual yearbook. Leather cover shows moderate wear and some small repairs to spine. Hinges/binding are strong/tight. Paper shows very little age-tanning. Very light foxing spots sprinkled within...not visible on most pages. Very few small oil or mineral stains...none prominent, and found on only one in 30 or 40 pages. One small chip from top of first page. Owner name inked on top of first page.
