Description: This is a brand new vintage skein of David Grains' virgin Lopi wool yarn. Lopi wool is unique to Icelandic sheep, evolving due to the sub-Arctic temperatures that the species has endured for more than a millennium. The fleece of these Icelandic sheep have two layers: the inner layer is called the "pel", and it is soft, fine and and insulating; the outer layer is called the "tog" and it has long, glossy fibers that repel water. Prior to the 1920's the two layers were separated and used for different purposed, but about a century ago natives discovered a way to combine the two layers, and Lopi wool - -that is both light and warm, and also waterproof (plus mothproof!) - -became a fast favorite! Incidentally, due to Lopi wool being inherently repellent to bacteria as well as liquids, it has been described as being "self-cleaning" and, and it is fire-retardant as well! It is also reasonably easy to work with; due to the special properties of Lopi wool, you can connect two different Lopi yarns by simply twisting them together! The skein of David Grain's virgin Lopi being offered is a lovely warm cream/winter white/beige color; I included a photo of the skein on a white plastic work table so that you could compare the two colors for easy reference! The skein weighs 101 grams (ie actual weight), and the packaging indicates that the yarn it contains measures approx. 110 yards. No discrepancies noted. This skein of authentic Icelandic Lopi yarn is brand new (as well as vintage!) and is sure to please! Buy with confidence! I ship same day/next day, and pack with great care.Even better?
