I have built and sold 100's of these over the years. * I got tired of low quality dowels available at box stores and local stores alike, so I invested in a dowel maker from Canada, and make all my own materials for these now. I use wood I have scavenged from crates and pallets, some from exotic locations, so sometimes the shafts are various types of mahogany, sometimes domestic poplar, oak or maple. I now also turn all the larger dowels on a lathe, since the quality is so much better, so there is some wood color variation from the picture above. Another improvement is the spinning handle is now turned from a solid piece, like a bodhran tipper, not glued up from a premade ball and shoddy dowel. All the instruments I list are hand made by me.
