Field Marshal Mikhail Kutuzov is one of the most famous and celebrated Russian military leaders. Having defeated Napoleon and destroyed his Grand Army, he defended Russia's independence and forever undermined the power of the "Corsican monster". But some facts from the life of the military leader are still little known to the general public. Next to Alexander NevskyHistorians argue about the exact date of birth of the great commander. According to official documents, Kutuzov was born in 1747, but his tombstone indicates a different date - 1745. His ancestor was the brave warrior Gavriil Aleksich, an associate of Alexander Nevsky. He fought shoulder to shoulder with the prince in the Battle of the Neva in 1240. The founder of the Golenishchev-Kutuzov family was the great-grandson of Aleksich - Alexander Prokshich, who had the nickname Kutuz. The word originated from the Turkic languages and meant a hot-tempered and violent person. Prokshich's grandson Vasily Ananievich, in turn, had the nickname Bootleg and was even a posadnik in Novgorod in 1471. War with NapoleonHaving left his homeland, Mikhail Illarionovich did not abandon military affairs. His knowledge was used in Moldova, Ukraine and Lithuania. In 1811, Kutuzov was returned to Russia. He was appointed commander-in-chief of the Russian field army during the war with Turkey. In 1811, he won a major victory over the Turks, which allowed Russia to sign a favorable peace treaty with Turkey. At the beginning of the campaign against the French in 1812, Kutuzov was in St. Petersburg. Alexander I appointed him commander, placing great responsibility on him. Napoleon's huge army was approaching the capital. Mikhail Illarionovich chose the tactics of retreat, avoiding a decisive battle. He sought a favorable position for the Russian troops and gave battle to the French at the village of Borodino. This battle was the beginning of the end for Napoleon's Grand Army. When the French entered deserted Moscow, Kutuzov left the enemy neither food nor shelter, and with the onset of the Russian winter, Napoleon began his long retreat from Russia. Kutuzov aggravated the suffering of the enemy by pursuing the retreating army from the rear. Of the 450,000 French soldiers, only 10,000 returned to France. 100% ORIGINAL!
