Description: High School Yearbook including students and faculty, activities and sports, candids, shots of the school and surrounding, and local advertisement, including future NFL super star football player Walter Payton. Walter's older brother appears in the senior class and football, and he signed the book. Walter Payton is a freshman. He reputedly did not play football due to that he did not want to compete with his older brother and instead played drums in the school band. There are very few captioned photos with the exception of the students. Great pictures and period design from a small African American high school with only 45 graduates this year. Walter Payton was an American professional football running back who played in the NFL for 13 seasons with the Chicago Bears and is widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. A nine-time Pro Bowl selection, Payton is remembered as a prolific rusher, once holding records for career rushing yeards, touchdowns, carries, yards from scrimmage, all-purpose yards, and many other categories. Payton also retired with the most receptions by a non-receiver, and he had eight career touchdown passes. He was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993, and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1996. He was named to the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team in 2019. Hall of Fame NFL player and coach Mike DItka described Payton as the greatest football player he had ever seen—but even greater as a human being. Payton had an outstanding college career at Jackson State playing for the Tigers, where he was named Little All-American twice twice. He started his professional career with the Bears in 1975 and he proceeded to win the 1977 AP NFL MVP and won Super Bowl XX with the 1985 Bears. He retired from football at the end of the 1987 season having rushed for at least 1,200 yards in 10 of his 13 seasons in the NFL (with two of those thirteen being lockout-shortened seasons).
