Description: Northeastern International Airways, Inc. was formed in March 1980, and gained authority for charter service in December 1980. However, actual flight operations did not begin until after scheduled service authority was secured early in 1982. Based in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Northeastern began DC-8 service on February 11, 1982, from Ft. Lauderdale to the MacArthur Airport, Islip, New York. Conceived as a low-cost, low-fare airline, Northeastern did not seek any mail contracts and no covers were flown on the inaugural flight to Islip. After the initial flight, Northeastern continued to expand its system. After having previously served the New York area through the MacArthur Airport at Islip, Northeastern began separate nonstop flights from Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando and West Palm Beach to New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. All flights were scheduled to take place on February 9, 1984 using Airbus A300 aircraft. The February 9 flight from West Palm Beach was canceled and the inaugural flight actually took place on February 10. Covers dispatched by West Palm Beach received a black February 9, PM machine cancellation or a February 9, AM slogan cancellation which noted the Florida State Fair. These covers were backstamped February 9 with a JFK International Airport, New York hand cancel with four thick killer bars. This cover was one of the only 33 pieces of mail carried on the inaugural Northeastern International Airways flight from West Palm Beach, Florida to New York, New York (where it was backstamped) and is listed in The American Air Mail Catalogue as QS-D30N..The West Palm Beach Philatelic Mail Clerk autographed the cover. In 1984 Northeastern International Airways began to have financial problems as was common with most of the low-cost, low-fare airlines. It initially filed for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Act on January 8, 1985. After several attempts to resume limited service with little success, Northeastern ceased operations in early 1986. In April 1986, the carrier was placed in Chapter 7 bankruptcy, the first step in the liquidation of the carrier and its assets. In July 1986, the Department of Transportation moved to decertify the airline.
