Description: Great piece of Northern New Mexico folk art depicting a couple in a covered carreta (ox cart). Two-wheeled carretas were typically made by Spanish settlers entirely out of wood as metal was rare and expensive in colonial New Mexico. The large wooden wheels were made to go over rough terrain and not be damaged. This carreta appears to be carved out of a single block of wood and is signed on the back of the base "MARIO". The artist chose to show the oxen straining to pull their load by leaning them forward. It measures approx. 10" long x 7.25" high x 5.5" wide. Weight = 3lbs. It has been left in a rough form which I think adds to its appeal.
