Cherry's and the Cherry Festival are a beloved summer tradition with deep roots in the region's cherry-growing heritage. Traverse City is known as THE CHERRY CAPITAL OF THE WORLD! The story of Traverse City Cherries begins in 1852. It begins with Reverend Peter Dougherty, a Presbyterian missionary living on Old Mission Peninsula. He ignored the advice of local farmers and planted the first cherry trees in the area. And the rest is Sweet and Tart Cherry History! Early Festival History beginnings were as something called the Blessing of the Blossoms. The festival's origins trace back to informal "blessing of the blossoms" ceremonies held by cherry growers around 1910. These gatherings celebrated the blossoming cherry trees, a crucial step in the cherry production process. In 1925, the "Blessing of the Blossoms Festival" officially launched with the involvement of local businesses and cherry farmers. The first Cherry Queen was crowned that year. The festival gained national prominence in 1931 when the Michigan state legislature declared it a national celebration, renaming it the National Cherry Festival. World War II interrupted the festival suspending it from 1942-1947but resumed in 1948. The festival expanded from three days to five in 1964 and became a week-long celebration in 1968.
