Description: Original oil painting on canvas by Swiss Modernist Max Burgmeier (1881-1947). The painting is titled on the top stretcher "Aarelandschaft" (Aare landscape) and depicts a scene in the Aare River valley of Switzerland. The canvas is signed with initials and dated in the lower right and the reverse of the top stretcher is signed in full and bears the title handwritten in graphite. The painting is framed in its original European Art Deco frame, quite well made, as you can see the finish and gold leafing were all done after the miters had been joined, only done on top notch frames. Good sized, the painting measures 18 x 24 inches and with frame is 24 x 29 3/4 inches. Frame has minor scuffs and dings, painting is in excellent condition commensurate with age. Max Burgmeier (1881-1947) was a Swiss Impressionist & Modern painter. His early work shows the influence of the Art Nouveau, but he moved on to modernism quite early in his career. Burgmeier was known for his landscapes, portrait and still life paintings. He was born in Aarau and spent most of his life living around the Aare River in Switzerland and painted scenes of this river valley again and again and at every stage of his career. He is a noted artist is Switzerland and there is a rather large website dedicated to his painted work and life.
