Description: Original oil painting by British genre painter Claude Andrew Calthrop (1845-1893). The painting is an oil on board and depicts a markedly confident boy child, most likely a London street urchin of the late Victorian era. It is signed in the lower right with the artist's initials and dated 1872. It measures 15 x 9 1/4 inches, with its period Aesthetic Movement frame it is 18 1/4 x 12 1/2 inches. The frame looks to be original, it has some chips and dings along the edges, the painting is in excellent condition. Claude Andrew Calthrop (1845-1893) was a British genre and historical painter born near Spalding in Lincolnshire. He began his art education under Mr. Sparkes at Lambeth, and was afterwards a student at the Royal Academy Schools, where he won the gold medal for historical painting. He also worked in Paris and Rome. Calthrop's work is represented in the permanent collections of Tate Gallery in London and the Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum.
