Description: ARTIST: Emil Poulsen is a Danish artist who studied at the Technical College from 1898-1902. He worked as a lithographer in Århus and Odense and was also a popular illustrator in the Socialdemocratic magazine “Ravnen”(“The raven”). For short periods between 1910-1920 he also worked as an actor in provincial theatres across Jutland. He painted several postcards and oil paintings. In the latter, he seems to have favored cityscapes and harbor scenes. PAINTING: Oil on canvas. The painting is an impressionistic rendering of a bustling Copenhagen harbor with smoking chimneys and huge warehouses. In the background one can make out a wooden mast crane and the silhouette of the city. A wooden ship is anchored around the center of the painting. The harbor itself has a long history and “Havn”(“Harbor”) was actually the original name of the settlement which later became Copenhagen. From famous sieges and naval battles to immense trade from the Danish colonies in the West Indies and later being the main departure point for the Danes moving to the US, Copenhagen harbor has been an important focal point for huge events in Danish history. I’ll date the painting to somewhere between 1925-1940. Signed: “Emil Poulsen” in the lower right corner. SIZE: With frame: 45 cm/17.7" * 38 cm/15". Without frame: 32 cm/12.6" * 25 cm/9.8". CONDITION: The painting is in great ready-to-hang condition - no holes, tears or missing paint. The frame has scratches and stains.
