Description: This is a old, hand woven, rare basket which was made by the Dogon People of Mali, Africa. This basket was hand made using reed pieces on the inside to form the structure which were then covered by thin strips of bark on the outside which are held on with woven raffia. This rare basket was used by the Dogon women to carry loads on their heads. To the Dogon of Mali even simple objects, carry a sacred value and a symbolic meaning. As with this basket its square-shaped base refers to the cardinal points while the circular-shaped top symbolizes the celestial vault. This African Dogon basket container measures 15 inches across the top by 8.50 inches across the bottom and 9 inches tall. This old Dogon basket is in great condition with very slight wear. This basket would be a perfect addition to any African collector's treasure trove or would be great for household use and for display purposes.
