Description: Old Virginia Houses Harbors by Emilee Hines (credited to Emmie Ferguson Farrar, who originally started the Old Virginia Houses series, and her niece, Emilee Hines, who actually wrote this volume), published by Delmar Publishing in 1984. This Book is a Hardcover with Dust Jacket measuring 8.75" x 11.375" with x+203 pages.Book DescriptionThis ninth volume in the Old Virginia Houses series features historic houses near water: the Atlantic Ocean and its barrier islands, the Chesapeake Bay, the Elizabeth River, and the creeks and inlets that surround and shape the land.Water is the common denominator between the busy cities of Virginia Beach, Norfolk, and Portsmouth, and the serene plantations of the Eastern Shore. Because of water this area has been important historically and strategically. The architecture of these areas is distinct. The typical Eastern Shore house is of frame with brick ends, and its style is "big house, little house, colonnade, and kitchen." In Virginia Beach, snug brick houses with gambrel rooflines predominate. Norfolk's remaining antebellum houses are mostly brick mansions; with few exceptions, they have become museums or are used commercially. Portsmouth's Olde Towne is one of the best preserved historic areas on the East Coast, with elegant townhouses set close to the street.Included are public and private houses, churches, courthouses, and other noteworthy buildings, displayed in photos and described historically and architecturally.ConditionThis Book is Conservatively Graded in Good Condition. The Dust Jacket (protected by a Brodart Dust Jacket Protector) has Very Light Fading to the Spine, Light Foxing, and some Edgewear, including Rubbing along the Spine and Fore Edges, a Small Area of Surface Wear at the Top Fore Edge Corner of the Rear Cover, and 1" long Tear at the Head of the Spine, but the Dust Jacket has No Stains or Other Major Damage. The Hardcover Boards retain Sharp Corners with No Tears, Creases, Stains, or Any Major Damage. The Binding is Strong and Intact. The Interior is Clean and Unmarked with No Writing, Highlighting, or Underlining with the Exception of a Presentation Bookplate on the Inside Front Cover and has occasional Very Light Foxing but No Tears, Creases, Stains, Musty Odor, or Other Major Damage. The Page Edges have Light Foxing but No Remainder Mark, Stains, or Other Major Damage.
