From a series of six 50 Pfennig Notgeld banknotes that was created and produced by Dr. Gerhard Stalling, who opened the world's first guide dog school for the blind in Oldenburg for the German Red Cross Ambulance Dogs Association in 1916. His name is written across the bottom of the notes. Many soldiers returned from the front with horrific injuries that often included blindness from poison gas or or shelling.
