Description: "Operation Joint Guardian", The US Army in Kosovo, details the evolution of the Kosovo nation and the politics that engulfed the region. In 1999, prior to Yugoslavia recognizing Kosovo as an independent state, United Nations forces, to include the United States, began a military campaign in this region, termed "Operation Joint Guardian". It evolved into a peace-keeping force, with five nations, the United States, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom, forming protective regions, much as Germany was carved into administrative zones following World War II. This booklet describes these military actions and the subsequent peace-keeping role. An unused copy of this publication is offered here for auction. Kosovo has been the center of military action and political upheaval for centuries. At various times it has been a part of Serbia, Yugoslavia, the Roman Empire, and the Ottoman Empire. Kosovo has a split population, part Serb and part Albanian, which led to much tension. It is also land-locked, surrounded by Albania, Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro. After the War of 1999, Yugoslavia agreed to grant Kosovo its independence, and in 2008, after a period of United Nations supervision, Kosovo became an independent nation, which it remains today. Other portions of Yugoslavia also broke off into independent states - Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia and Macedonia.
