Description: Handsome original hand colored antique engraved 1824 map of Roman Libya and the northern coast of Africa. Topography is drawn in relief, and the distance scale is calibrated in Roman Miles. The map is titled "Libyæ, vel Africæ, ora borealis; cura et studio D. Macpherson." There are numerous named places and features, mostly along the Mediterranean Coast, including Leptis Magna, in the territory of the Lotophagi (Lotus Eaters), and today site of some of the best-preserved Roman sites in the Mediterranean, within present-day Khoms, Libya. The heading in the upper margin is Geographiæ Antiquæ Tab. IX. The map was compiled by David Macpherson, and published in Philadelphia by Samuel F. Bradford and Murray, Fairman & Company in the Geographiæ Antiquæ atlas to accompany Abraham Rees' Cyclopædia, or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature, 1824. The initials of the engraver are in the lower corner. Condition: This map is in excellent condition, bright, crisp, and clean, with no marks, rips, or tears. It is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions.
