Description: Handsome 1833 map of the World as it was known in antiquity, in original outline color. The coverage area extends from the Atlantic Ocean to central China, between the northern tip of Scandinavia and lands just to the south of the Equator. Topography is drawn in relief, and the map spans all of Europe, Asia Minor, Arabia and India, much of Northern Africa, and parts of Southeast Asia. It defines the limits of the Roman Empire and locates two areas as home to cannibals, labeled "Anthropophagi" on the map:North of Orosana in Siberia Southern Ethiopia, east of Zanzibar on the coast of the Barbarian Gulf. The map was complied from various sources, including Ptolemy, Herodotus, Thucydides, and others. It was published in Joseph Meyer's Universal-Atlas, Hildburghausen, circa 1833. It was drawn by Lieutenant L. Renner, a military officer recruited by Meyer to work on the cartography of his various atlases. The map is titled Circuitus Orbis Terrarum Veteribus Cogniti (The world as known to the Ancients). It is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. The image area measures 21 x 26.6 cm [8¼" x 10½"].
