Description: Original hand colored highly detailed 1865 map of Maine, showing wagon roads, Indian townships, plantations, land grants, lighthouses, canals, and railroads. The map was published by Johnson & Ward, New York and is titled: "Johnson's Maine." The image area measures 40 x 32 cm [15¾" x 12½"], and there is a distance scale in the lower corner. There is wonderful detail throughout, including a network of roads, identified as "common roads" in the legend key, used by stagecoaches and wagons, as well as travelers on foot and horseback. The map labels Indian townships and shows lands granted to various schools and institutions. It also delineates the state's northwest boundary, as settled by the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842. Among the other named places and features on the map are the Kennebec & Penobscot Railroad, York, Mount Katahdin, Madawaska Settlements, Milton Plantation, Bowdoin Grant, Alfred, Grand Manan Island, Augusta, Pittsfield, Belfast, Rockland, Boone Island Lighthouse, the European & American Railroad, Portland, Freeport, Dover, and Mount Desert Island. The legend key also identifies railroads, canals, county towns, and post offices. The map has a decorative fretwork border, and longitude is measured from Washington and Greenwich. Condition: This map is in very good condition, sound and clean, with an overall antique patina and no rips, tears, or writing. There is letterpress text on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. It is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. It is an excellent example of the cartographic artistry of the Johnson & Ward firm, one of the nation's most esteemed early mapmakers. Johnson maps are proudly showcased in museums, libraries, and private collections around the world. This map would make an impressive display in your den or office.
