The submachine guns Edited by Lieutenant Colonel Butz Issued March 1943 Wa 11/11a Ludwig Voggenreiter Verlag Potsdam Weapon tables The submachine guns I. General The submachine gun is an extremely effective and handy weapon for close combat. The German Army mainly uses the M.P. 38 and 40, M.P. 18 I and 28 II (Schmeißer), M.P. 34 (Austrian). From the M.P. 38, 40, 18 I and 28 II only the pistol cartridge 08 (caliber 9 mm) can be fired, from the M.P. 34 (Austrian) only the lg. Mauser pistol cartridge caliber 9 (Austrian designation: 9 mm/M./34 live cartridge). The steady position of the weapon in continuous fire enables the bullet pattern to be kept close together. Small targets can be attacked with good success up to a distance of 100 m, and larger targets up to a distance of 200 m. Over a distance of 200 m, the use of ammunition no longer corresponds to success. The small number of cartridges that can be carried by the rifleman and the difficulty of supplying ammunition to the front line limit their use for short-range shooting and close combat. The M.P. are all recoil-loading rifles, i.e. the cartridge is inserted into the barrel, ignited, extracted and ejected by the recoil in conjunction with the spring force. The barrel is stationary when firing. The bolt is not rigid, i.e. the bolt is not rigidly locked to the rear by the bolt in the M.P. The locking is caused by: a) the force of the bolt (lock mass) still moving forward, b) the moment of inertia of the bolt mass, c) the pressure of the locking spring."
