Description: Orthoceras ,meaning straight horn,is the cousin of the modern day squid or octopus. These 400 million year old fossils, who lived between the Ordovician and Triassic Era,are all natural as they come out of the old sea beds they are found in and can have some matrix host rock still on them as seen in the picture,,these primitive cephalopoda are like a straight shelled ammonite and have chambers separated by walls called septa which can be easily seen in these specimens and a tube that runs down the center of the fossil called a siphuncle that is believed to have conveyed gas to control buoyancy and these tubes can also be seen in these specimens. Each winner will receive 1 pound of natural fossils sized approximately 1/8 to 1 3/4 inches wide and 3/4 to 2 1/2 inches long scooped from fossils as pictured with lots containing approximately 35 plus fossils.Great educational and hands on learning Orthoceras fossil specimens. These specimens are from North Africa near the Sahara desert and are nice specimens for hands on educational use as well as collections.
