Description: This pair of Japanese maki-e jitsu-getsu lacquer soup bowls with lids were bought in Japan by my parents in the 1950s. They were never used as soup bowls, but displayed as art. "Jitsu-getsu" is a traditional Japanese design meaning "Sun & Moon". The gold circle is described as the sun, and the silver circle is described as the moon. Maki-e ("sprinkled picture or design") is a Japanese art form in which pictures or patterns are drawn with lacquer on the surface of lacquerware, and then metal powder such as gold or silver is sprinkled and fixed on the surface of the lacquerware. The maki-e on these bowls is real silver and gold.
