Pair of 2 Big Vintage Turkmen Pendants - Handmade Dance Theater Statement #4627

Description: This listing includes both Turkmen (Turkoman) pendants as shown for the one price given. They are vintage tribal-jewelry, handmade for the Ersari sub-tribe along the Old Silk Road of Central Asia. More measurements and specifics are listed here at the end. Pendants like these were called gulyakas, which means "neck flower," since they were often worn at the neckline. When found in pairs like these, they were also worn with one on each side of the body, sewn to clothing with the dangles hanging freely to sway with movement. Their round design is shaped like blazing suns, with red beads that add vibrant color while warding off the evil-eye. The etched patterns of stars that surround the center beads were once gold gilded, but that has worn away leaving only the etching behind. These are sturdily made pendants, and do not bend. They have a rich age-patina, including some verdigris which collectors love. The backs of each pendants has a large double-bail, oddly facing opposite directions. To show relative size, I placed one on a display necklace-cord and pinned the other one into a manikins hair.
