Description: Beautiful pair of oil on canvas portraits measuring 17"x 21" which are in their original gold frames. The children are the son and daughter of George P. Hier who was the mayor of Syracuse New York in 1875. Along with his brother also operated one of the largest cigar and tobacco companies in New York State. He also possessed large land and railroad holdings. These portraits were done by Joseph Allen Haskell who was a New York artist that did many society portraits such as these. This pair of paintings have descended through the family until being offered now. Both paintings underwent conservation in 1977 at the Cooperstown art conservatory. Both have complete paperwork of the work done on them along with a postcard from the Smithsonian in Washington DC showing they were registered in their archives of American artists. The paintings are signed on the reverse and dated 1862. The quality of the portraits is magnificent with great sensitivity and expression. This is a real treasure for the collector of American portraiture. Track Page Views WithAuctiva's FREE Counter
