Pair Sir John Hill, Royal Gardener To Queen Charlotte, 18th C. Framed Botanicals

Description: Here is your opportunity to own a pair of exquisite and rare antique botanical engravings by the famous sir John Hill with numerous flowers arranged in rows, each indicated with the name in English. These are antique prints, likely from the herbarium “The British Erbal: a History of Plants and Trees natives of Britain” although they have information about Hill’s “Vegetable System” on reverse. These etchings by Sir John Hill were published in London 1756-1759. These etchings are beautifully colored and retain much of their original vibrancy. They are also professionally matted and framed. Each etching measures approximately 14.5 inches x 9 inches (plate each/sight): 15.75 x 10 inches (sheet each/sight). Framed they measure approximately 29.75 inches by 23.25 inches. John Hill was born in 1714, and initially was trained as a pharmacist. During the reign of George III and his consort Queen Charlotte he worked as a gardener at Kensington Palace and helped with the botanical garden at Kew, which was his inspiration for his floral engravings. The items is antique and sold as is and as found. It may show wear, fading, scratches, stains , creases, original imperfections and/or other forms of damage. Both have toning, slight foxing, and handling wear at sight. Not examined out of frame, verso are sheet sealed. In particular I note a small instance of foxing/discoloration on the “Fennell Giant” as shown in photos. Examine photos carefully as they are part of the description. Imperfections were factored into pricing. No returns or refunds. Freight Shipping or local pickup must be arranged by the buyer. Buyers assume full responsibility for the pick up, packing and shipping of purchases or lots won at auction. Please contact a shipping company to make shipping arrangements.
