"Phil Bissell was born on February 1, 1926 in Worcester, Massachusetts. Upon graduating from high school, he was directly inducted in the U.S. Army for the remainder of World War II. After the war, he studied art in Boston using his GI Bill to pay for his education. Determined to break into the newspaper business as a cartoonist, he took a job as a copy boy, eventually working his way up to becoming the sports cartoonist for The Boston Globe. In 1959, he drew a cartoon advertising the new professional football team in Boston, the Patriots. His "Pat Patriot" became a football icon, acting as the team's official mascot until being replaced in the 1990s. An award winning cartoonist, Mr. Bissell's work hangs in the NFL, NBA, MLB and many other sports teams' Hall of Fames as well as the Eisenhower and Ford Presidential Libraries" above quote from Bissell, Phil.
