During the 1920s and 1930s, personnel from the Players, a New York City club dedicated to the arts and their appreciation, staged an annual revival of a play for a week, capping off the final performance with an exclusive club party given at midnight. The revival for 1935, Seven Keys to Baldpate, was written by George M. Cohan and originally produced in 1913. Cohan (1878-1942), an entertainer, playwright, composer, lyricist, actor, singer, dancer and theatrical producer, was a member of the Players. In this revival, Cohan played the leading role in the play he had written 22 years before. Noted actor Otis Skinner delivered a foreword. This program contains numerous illustrations by Frederic Dorr Steele, Raymond N. Crosby, and other Players members; background on Cohan's play; excerpts from an article on the production; pictures of handbills and posters from prior annual revivals; an article on the Players Club by Frederic Dorr Steele; an article by Hendrik Willem Van Loon; and of course the cast list and production credits for this production. The Players Club still exists. According to its website: "The Players is a club of artists and arts lovers. Members are drawn from a wide range of professions, including those with careers on the stage and screen, the visual arts, and music and literature, as well as patrons of the arts. Together, we celebrate the richness of our creative communities with exclusive events and relaxed socializing. Players need not be actors, though performers have been part of our DNA since our founding by the legendary Edwin Booth in 1888." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
