Jenkinjones is an unincorporated community and coal mining town situated in McDowell County, West Virginia, United States. It is positioned on the western slopes of Stone Ridge, close to the boundary with Tazewell County, Virginia. The community is home to the Pocahontas Fuel Company Store and Office Buildings, which were recognized on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. The establishment of its post office dates back to October 15, 1912. Between 1961 and 1975, the Pocahontas Fuel Company Inc. documented the extraction of 8,290,780 tons of coal from the Jenkinjones area. The Pocahontas Fuel Company Incorporated began operations in West Virginia's southern coal fields around 1870, although these resources had been known for a longer period. A significant coal field in the southern region was the Flat Top-Pocahontas Field, primarily located in Mercer and McDowell counties. The Flat Top Field commenced coal shipments in 1883 and experienced rapid growth thereafter. As operations consolidated into larger entities, the Pocahontas Fuel Company, established in 1907, quickly became the leading company in McDowell County. The Pocahontas Consolidated Collieries Company played a crucial role in supplying coal to the Isthmian Canal Commission and the Panama Railroad under contract starting April 1, 1911, utilizing coal produced by the Pocahontas Consolidated Collieries Company, Incorporated, along with a few other operators in the Pocahontas and New River fields of Virginia and West Virginia. The Pocahontas Fuel Company Store, a historic structure, was located in Switchback, McDowell County, West Virginia. Designed by architect Alex B. Mahood and constructed in 1917, it featured a two-story brick design with a one-story wing that accommodated the business office. The building had a flat roof, was elevated on a high stone foundation, and showcased Neoclassical architectural elements, including a brick cornice with a concrete parapet and a concrete entablature adorned with dentils. It was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. Item ordered may not be exact piece shown. All original and authentic.
