We commissioned this painting for our art gallery in 2005. In the painting, you can see the minister Johannes Wtenbogtaert is standing beside a table upon which lies an open manuscript. It is as though he has interrupted his studies to turn to look at the viewers. Rembrandt's use of light directs the view's attention towardsWtenbogaert's wrinkled face, the bright expression of his eyes. his snow-white, pleated ruff. The open manuscript also catches the light. Wtenbogaert (1577-64) was one of the most important religious leaders of the Dutch golden Age. He was the founder and leader of the Remonstrant Brotherhood. At the request of one of his followers, he had his portrait painted by Rembrandt when he was 76 years of age.The young Rembrandt painted this portrait in 1633, at a time when he was well on the way to becoming one of Amsterdam's most celebratedportrait painters. He signed the painting with his first name, Rembrandt. He allowed one of his pupils to paint the hands.The old skin is less wrinkled than Rembrandt usually painted. He went on to live to the age of 87. In 1638, his portrait was once again painted, this time by a successor of Rembrandt's in Amsterdam, Jacob Backer. The minister was extremely popular and his portrait was painted many times. In 1635, Rembrandt made an etched portrait of him to distribute among Wtenbogaert's followers. Reference 1.
