Description: Offered is beautifully cabinet, portrait plate of a Victorian dressed lady in a beflowered bonnet with a pretty blue floral dress and carrying a bouquet of flowers as well. The center portrait is surrounded by a gold floral circle with embossed arches and gold scrollwork around the edges. The plate is an impressive 11 and 1/4 inches wide and about 1 and 1/2 inches deep with a curve making it lean towards being a bowl. An article by Mark Gonzalez entitled Homer Laughlin Portrait Plates discusses these plates made between 1905 and 1911 picturing this shape as an Arches one with the same portrait but done on a hexagon shaped plate. The coloring of pink and blue is unusual for the time and the company. While this one isn't perfect (see description and pictures), it still displays very well and is a beautiful example of early Homer Laughlin China. Finding one of these plates is like finding a small treasure for any Homer Laughlin collector! Homer Laughlin Company started his china company (with his brother Shakespeare) in 1873 in Ohio (moving to West Virginia in 1907). Shakespeare left the company in 1879, but Homer Laughlin's legacy continues on as china is still made by the company under that name to this day.
